About Punta Gorda
Punta Gorda Town is located on the west coast of the Caribbean Sea in Southern Belize. It is geographically part of the Gulf of Honduras. The town is the administrative capital of the Toledo District.
Punta Gorda is the gateway to the attractions that abound in the Toledo district. From off-shore fishing, to river trips to caving, birding and Maya Archaeological sites – the Toledo district and Punta Gorda offer everything a visitor to Belize will expect to find. To top it all off, Toledo is a district not only filled with natural beauty in abundance but also home to some of the nicest people. Here Maya, Garifuna and East Indian Belizeans live harmoniously while maintaining their individual cultures.
Punta Gorda functions as the economical center for the surrounding villages. People from an area of 900 square miles commute daily to the district capital for work and trade.
Punta Gorda has a hospital, schools of all levels, from pre-school to the University of Belize, and several denominational churches.
The Toledo district is connected to the rest of the country through local airlines and bus services and is also conveniently accessible from Guatemala through boat service from Puerto Barrios (Guatemala) to Punta Gorda.
Numerous hotels and lodges in and around Punta Gorda as well as restaurants are available. Tour outfitters as well as local individual tour guides help visitors discover this jewel in the south of Belize.
